It was on the occasion of the diaconal ordination of Joseph Mumbere, the first Comboni Missionary in the diocese of Butembo, that Bishop Melchisedech Sikuli Paluku expressed to the vice-provincial, Fr. Bernasconi, who was present at the ceremony, the desire to see a community of missionary animation in the diocese.
Few years ago, Fr. Amonini, Fr. Wokorach, Fr. Lelo Ngumba and Bro. Jacques Eluma had been visiting the diocese regularly.
At the ordination of Joseph Mumbere to the priesthood on 26th August 2001, the Bishop reiterated his request. The provincial superior, Fr. Zolli, assured him that arrangements were being made.
Zolli assured him that we were in the process of organising ourselves. The conclusions of the 2007 Regional Assemblies were unanimous regarding our 'rebalanced' missionary service: "To open in Butembo a community dedicated to vocations promotion and missionary animation". Fr. Senen Gandara was in charge of the construction.
On 2nd August 2009, the Comboni Missionaries were granted permission to set up "a religious community in the M.G.L Quarter in Kitatumba Parish. The "mandate to work for evangelisation, pastoral care in its various aspects and formation according to the charism proper to their Congregation and in conformity with the orientations and directives of the universal Church, as our Church, the Family of God of Butembo-Beni, also wishes".
On the following 10th October, on the occasion of the feast of St. Daniel Comboni, the Bishop of Butembo blessed the house. Fr. Gandara and J. A. Fraile, Bro. André Kpeze and 16 Propaedeutic students were present.
The main aim is Missionary Animation, in the broadest sense of the term, as a service to the growth of the missionary dimension in all areas of the Local Church: formation, pastoral activity, ecclesial collaboration (RM).
The secondary aim is the Animation of Vocations at the service of the missionary Church (CDC № 385) and therefore, indirectly, followed by the aspirants to the Comboni Institute.

The present members of the community of Butembo are:
